"Destination Algonquin Park" - Doreen Wood

The Alex Dufresne Gallery is delighted to invite you to the opening reception of “Destination Algonquin Park”, celebrating the iconic landscapes of Algonquin Park. Join us on Saturday May 11th to experience the allure of Algonquin Park through the eyes of talented local artist Doreen Wood.

“This exhibition has been my hope for a few years, artists try to express themselves non-verbally. This is what I hope to do,” says artist Doreen Wood, regarding her upcoming exhibition at the Alex Dufresne Gallery in Callander. The show focuses on Algonquin Park, a place very dear to her.

“Our lives are constantly surrounded by people, schedules, obligations, demands, the media, the telephone, etc. The goal in this little exhibition is to take you to a place that is a haven. It is not far away and requires no airfare or passport.

Algonquin Park has been a part of my family’s life since I was a teen and since my mother’s infancy. The area of the park I represent is in the north west corner at access #1.

A short drive east of South River, with canoe, a pack with food for a week, and someone to share time is all you need. The park gate is at Kawawaymog Lake. As you paddle across the lake the hustle of like starts to ease. It is early morning and soon the day will gritty you. Then winding your way up the beautiful Amable de Fond River the sound of the paddle and the freshness of the air beckons you on. Two portages later you crest the hill and carefully descent to North Tea Lake. I have tried to describe the feeling as you look down a lake that never changes. You have arrived.

There is a little cabin near the end of the lake that our family shares with some others on a lease. It is the only cabin on the lake. It sits by the Amable du Fond River at the portage to Manitou Lake. It has been our destination for years and keeps many memories. Others in the park are in tents. There are beautiful sites to chose from. Many visit the park for the fishing… lake trout. Other lake connect, Lost Dog, Biggar, Manitou. They are the only ones I have seen.

I have learned about the value of working together and depending on each other. There is no phone or contact with home. I have learned about the value of an uncluttered mind. I learn each time what really matters and I have learned to be thankful.

It usually takes a day or two to connect with Algonquin, but she is patient and ready to offer her solace.”

The opening reception will feature a captivating collection of paintings inspired by the breathtaking scenery and rich biodiversity of Algonquin Park. From serene lakes to towering forests, each artwork offers a unique interpretation of this beloved natural treasure.

"We are thrilled to showcase the beauty of Algonquin Park through the creative expressions of our local artists," said Natasha Wiatr, Curator at the Alex Dufresne Gallery. "This exhibition is a celebration of both artistic talent and the splendor of our natural environment."

Doreen Wood has been a member of the Burks Falls Art and Crafts Club for more than twenty year and have served in several capacities. She was also a member for some years on the newly-formed Almaguin Highlands Art Council. Painting has been her companion for more than fifty years with many paintings in private collections nationally and internationally.

Her artist statement reads “In this world with all its problems, I feel so grateful that I can see the beauty, the peace, the harmony, the strength and that I can share it with others. Find solace in the beauty and power of creation.”
